A HOT afternoon of competition saw the Gone Fishing team reel in the victory at the Smokin’ Hot Barbecue Competition 2014.
The event, held at the Green Parrot on Bay Street, drew huge crowds to sample the food on offer from a host of teams, including from The Tribune and 100Jamz.
Organisers estimated that more than 2,000 people attended the event.
Gone Fishing took the grand title, led by Haymish Moxey, who has a regular stall east of Arawak Cay. He landed the $1000 prize and has had his registration paid for to take part in the Puerto Rico Caribbean championship as well as entry into the Jack Daniels worldwide competition in Tennessee.
The second place prize of $600 was given to BahamabarBKing, led by Kwivan Miller, from Stapledon Gardens, who was last year’s runner-up. Smoking Haulers (from Bahamas Waste) came third, winning $300, with Da Pit Boyz from Cable Bahamas in fourth.
“It’s a growing event and a lot of great sponsors have already signed on for it next year. It’s only going to get bigger and better,” said event organiser Jenny Pinder.
There were about 45 stalls at the event, which also featured a photography competition and a trash the dress event, with a wedding dress being thoroughly splattered with sauces by participants from the various stalls.
Organisers included Alexis Garcia and Michael Compton, while meat was donated by Bahamas Food Services. More than 2,500 lbs of meat was donated for the event.
Each team cooked extra meat to be presented to the Hands For Hunger charity.
