FREEPORT - A man was shot and killed late on Monday evening during a chase and shoot-out with police that ended at the Warren J Levarity Highway.

Jatangy “Yellow” Lockhart, a resident of South Bahamia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim is believed to be an employee at the harbour. He is married and the father of a three-year-old boy.

His wife, an immigration officer, is said to be devastated: she went to the hospital yesterday to identify her husband’s body and was accompanied by immigration colleagues.

According to reports, sometime around 9:45pm on Monday police received information of gunshots being fired in Bartlette Hill, Eight Mile Rock. They were told that the shots were fired from a white Chevy Truck. Officers responded and a short time later intercepted the truck.

There was an exchange of gunfire between the occupant of the truck and the police. The driver sped off and the police gave chase. The truck crashed in bushes off the Warren J Levarity Highway, where it was discovered that the occupant had been fatally injured.

Inspector Terecita Pinder said officers recovered a firearm at the scene. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel. The body was taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital morgue. The Tribune understands that the family of the deceased was notified by police of the death around 3am yesterday.

There are unconfirmed reports that Mr Lockhart had gone to Eight Mile Rock to collect a debt.
