Sexual offenders register must be made retroactive

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The legislation regarding the register of sexual offenders (Marco’s law) is coming soon. My understanding is that the register will contain, names, descriptions and addresses of all known sexual offenders.

The information would be public and should assist in reducing incidents of sexual attacks and improve detection of such crimes when reported.

Photographs of the person in the register would also be available.

At the present time, the police criminal records office and the Ministry of Social Services can provide the information required for the register.

I was very surprised to hear, that the proposed legislation will not be retroactive. This would defeat the purpose of the register.

If the legislation is not retroactive, we will not have any names to place on the register until persons are convicted in the future of sexual offences.

Social services enthusiasts, women groups and persons involved in activities related to the protection of children must lobby to have the law made retroactive.
