'Golden Knights' go head-to-head

IN the first meeting together since they teamed up to win the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, three of the four ‘Golden Knights’ went head-to-head in a major international meet.

At the Meeting International Region Guadeloupe 2014 in Guadeloupe on Saturday night, Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown, Demetrius Pinder and Ramon Miller all contested the 400 metres, while Bianca ‘BB’ Stuart participated in the women’s long jump.

Going head-to-head in the men’s 400m, Miller had the best showing with a second place in 45.21, followed by Brown in third in 45.23 and Pinder, back in action after recovering from an injury, was fourth in 45.59. Trinidad & Tobago’s Lalonde Gordon won the race in 44.91.

Stuart, the only other Bahamian competing in the meet, was second in the women’s long jump, soared 6.59 metres or 21-feet, 7 1/2-inches for second place. The winning leap was 6.64m (21-9 1/2) by Abigail Irozuru of Great Britain.

Meanwhile at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Tokyo, Japan, the other ‘Golden Knight’, Michael Mathieu, competed in the men’s 200m. He ran 20.64 as he got edged out at the tape by Olympic 400 metre champion Kirani James of Grenada, who won in 20.63.

Mathieu also doubled up in the 100m, placing fourth in 10.41. American Justin Gatlin won the race in 10.02, followed by his compatriot in 10.11. Christophe Lemaitre of France was third in 10.31.

And Anthonique Strachan, who is gearing up to represent Team Bahamas at the IAAF World Relays May 24-25 at the newly refurbished Thomas A Robinson Stadium, won the women’s 200m in 22.82, well ahead of Amantle Montsho of Botswana in 23.25. American DeeDee Trotter was third in 23.39.

At the Doha Diamond League, Donald Thomas was the lone Bahamian in competition. He contested the high jump where he finished tied for 8th with a leap of 2.24m (7-4 1/4) with Mickael Hanany of France. Russian world champion Ivan Ukhov won with 2.41m (7-10 3/4).
