A PAIR of new teams made their debut in the New Providence Softball Association on Tuesday night, highlighting an expansion in the women’s division.
The College of the Bahamas Caribs scored a 16-4 win over the Proper Care Young Stars at the Banker’s Field, Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.
Ashanti Darville gave up just two hits in the win while Valencia Gibson was tagged with the loss.
Scoreless through one and-a-half innings, the Young Stars reached the scoreboard first to take a 1-0 lead.
The Caribs responded with five runs in the top half of the third inning to take control of the game for good. They led 5-2 after the third inning and 7-4 after the fourth.
A nine-run flurry in the fifth inning put the game out of reach and sealed the first win in school history for COB.
Atiya Deal led the way offensively with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI, Richana Bain finished 2-4 with one run scored and Darville helped her own cause at the plate as she went 1-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Kenyoka Ingraham finished 1-3 with one RBI to lead the Young Stars while Keisha Pratt finished 1-2 with one run scored.
In the men’s feature, Arnette’s Sporting Hitmen took a 9-1 win over the Mighty Mitts.
Vaval Sands was the winning pitcher while Victor Grant suffered the loss.
The Hitmen moved to 2-0 after a 14-1 win over the DK Smoker’s on opening night.
The Mitts fell to 0-2 after they opened the year with a 17-13 loss to the Smokers.
A slow start to the game after two innings, the Mitts took a 1-0 lead into the third, which would be their only score of the game.
The Hitmen rallied with four runs in the top of the third and also added two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.
Martin Burrows led the Hitmen, 2-3 with a two run home run, Angelo Dillet was 1-1 with two runs scored and one RBI while Rudy Fox went 2-3 with two runs scored.
Glen Evans led the Mitts, 1-2 at the plate.
Play is scheduled to continue tonight at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.
