A MAN is dead and five others are injured following a fiery car crash on Grand Bahama Highway early Saturday morning in East Grand Bahama. The accident happened around 1am involving two vehicles, one of which erupted into flames on impact.
The man who died has been identified as Ramon Laing, although the names of the other five victims have not been released as yet by police.
Inspector Terecita Pinder, police press liaison officer, reported that the accident occurred in the vicinity of the old Freetown Farm. According to preliminary investigations, a Chevy Cavalier was travelling west along Grand Bahama Highway. Five persons were in the vehicle – four men and one woman.
The male driver of a white-coloured Chevy Cobalt was travelling east. Following the collision, the Cobalt was engulfed in flames. Police, officers of the Fire Branch and EMS personnel were called to the scene.
After the fire was extinguished, human remains were discovered inside the Cobalt.
The deceased man is believed to be a resident of East Grand Bahama. The five other victims were taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital, where they are detained. Their conditions are said to be stable. There are reports that the woman sustained serious injuries which may have resulted in paralysis.
Inspector Pinder said investigations are continuing into the cause of the crash. This incident marks the second traffic fatality on Grand Bahama for 2014. Police are advising members of the public to slow down and to drive within the required speed limit. Motorists are also being urged to wear their seatbelts.
