Gone fishing

THE fishing grounds near Eleuthera and Abaco have been lively over the past week with the best to be found near Eleuthera about a mile off the Dutch Bars or at Shallow Ground, which is closer to Harbour Island.

Geoff O’Connell, a fishing expert, 2013 off-shore champion and who lives in Spanish Wells, has provided an update/tip this week about fishing on the Dutch Bars. “Lots of small Tuna under flocks of birds with medium to large Yellow Fin Tuna in the 30 to 70lbs range mixed in with a few Mahi - lots of sharks with the schools of Tuna,” he reports.

In Abaco, the Mahi and Marlin are being caught between Hope Town and Cherokee Sound and Man o’ War birds are the key to spotting the Mahi there.

The second leg of the Bahamas Billfish Championship (BBC) takes place this weekend in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. The first leg in Guana Cay saw an abundance of Marlin caught and released.
