IF YOU are a lover of the butterfly, Hillside House Art Gallery was the place to be last Tuesday, as Bahamian artist Elkino Dames displayed his recent works in an exhibition entitled “The Beauty of Maturity.”
According to Elkino, the butterflies depicted in “The Beauty of Maturity” are emblematical of his advancement to a state of maturity as an artist.
“I see myself reaching a place as an artist where I am being fully divested of the vices of youthful indiscretions that would so easily beset me in the past. My expressionistic style of painting gives each piece in this body of work its own presence and soul,” said Elkino.
In August last year, Elkino spoke with Tribune Entertainment in regards to his very first solo art exhibition at Graycliff Restaurant.
He was determined not be pigeonedholed for his first solo show, as he successfully explored a variety of themes. In that show he gave viewers his perspective on love, nature, religion, and spirituality.
Elkino has always had a passion for fine art. He worked as assistant curator at the Central Bank of the Bahamas for two years, mentored by Antonius Roberts. He was also mentored and guided by the late Vincent D’Aguilar who acquired seven of his paintings for his collection.
Elkino said he had an advantage when putting together the body of work for “The Beauty of Maturity” – the wisdom placed in him by God above.
“Our Creator, in his wisdom, he chose such a small insignificant creature to bestow such beauty on. I dedicated this body of work to the memory of my Grand Father, Rev Dr Earle Francis, who was pivotal in my progression to the state of maturity in every aspect of my life,” said Elkino.
With 13 pieces on display, Elkino said the exhibition opening gathered a good number of people who offered support both in finances and complements.
While the exhibition came to a close at Hillside House Art Gallery yesterday, Elkino said he will be present at a number of venues soon. He encouraged his supporters to “like” his works on Facebook at Elkino Dames Fine Arts and Designs to stay up to date with his upcoming activities and events.
“I extend a special thank you to Antonius Roberts and his exceptional staff at the Historic Hillside House Gallery for the quality service they’ve provided during this exhibition process. Also all those who showed support by purchasing pieces and extending well wishes,” said Elkino.
