Debt collection laws

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I have to question the statement of the Minister of State Finance as to whether it is legal that the Ministry of Finance has retained a private contractor to collect taxes due-owing?

Surely the Finance Act does not empower the Minister to allow confidential information, personal data to be accessed by unauthorised parties? How does the Personal Data Protection Act play into this? Is there a total breach of our privacy?

Notwithstanding all of the above it seems yet again there was no transparency as to the request for such services - no public tender for the supply of such services so how is it a seemingly yet a further “favoured son” has been retained to carry out this work?

Time and time again, this government doesn’t like following the law and legitimacy.

If you don't pay your taxes, you expect that the government still keep your information confidential?!?!

Only the Government is empowered to bring a legal action against a person for non-payment of their taxes. The law prohibits the Government from selling, assigning or otherwise disposing of its right to bring any legal action against any delinquent taxpayer.
