Students hit track and field for Primary School Nationals

OVER 1,000 athletes representing 66 schools across the Bahamas opened competition yesterday in the premier athletics meet for primary school students.

The 2014 edition of the Frank “Pancho” Rahming National Primary School Championships got underway at the original Thomas A Robinson stadium, with Family Island schools making a major statement on the opening day of competition.

Through 14 events, Grand Bahama’s Martin Town Primary led the boys team scores with 22 points. North and Central Andros was second with 16 points, Temple Christian and Walter Parker were tied for third with 15 points and James A Pinder rounded out the top five and teams in double figures with 10 points. North and Central Andros topped the girls with 30 points.

Queen’s College and St Francis and Joseph were tied for second with 23 points while Temple Christian and Hugh Campbell were tied for fourth with 20 points.

Day one was highlighted by the 200m and 400m on the track while the high jump and long jump took centre stage in the field.

Results of the 800m in the B division were unavailable up to press time last night.

In the boys’ B 200m, Martin Town pulled off a one-two finish. Shamar Smith took first place in 27.58s while Zion Campbell finished second in 27.63s. Antonio Bethel of Queen’s College was third in 27.66s.

In the boys’ D 200m, Martin Town took first place again when Tyrone Conliffe won the event in 31.21s.

Quinton Gordon of Walter Parker finished in 32.24 and Bryson Rolle of Claridge Primary was third in 32.99s.

Kharys Bodie of St Francis took the Girls D 200m in 35.43s, followed by Jayden Rolle of Abaco District (36.14s) and Tylah Pratt of North and Central Andros (36.25s).

In the girls B 200m, Paige Stuart of Cleveland Eneas took the 200m in 27.70s, followed by Denah Lafleur of Walter Parker (28.03s) and Lukell Lagurre of Bartlett Hill (28.71s).

In the C category, Michael Cartwright of Temple Christian took the boys event in 29.28s followed by Van Forbes of Walter Parker (30.00s) and Shanton Sawyer of Palmdale Primary (30.09s).

Queen’s College’s Sarah Hepburn took the girls event in 30.27s, followed by Karis Thompson of Kingsway Academy (30.51s) and Nya Wright of TC (30.83s).

Temple Christian took two of the three 400m races on the day.

Nathan Moss took the boys A event in 57.86s. Deangelo of North and Central Andros was second in 59.30s and Ethan Hanna of Thelma Gibson was third in.59.88s.

Carlyia Miller-Johnson crossed the line first in the girls A event in 1:06.81s.

Terganae Duncombe of Holmes’ Rock was second in 1:08.32s and Charisma Mackey of Carlton Francis was third in 1:08.44s.

The other quarter-mile race was won by Lanique Thompson of Queen’s College in 1:14.09s followed by Raven Pratt of Cleveland Eneas (1:17.59s) and Breyanna Kemp of Charles W Saunders (1:17.95s).

Family Island schools dominated the field events on day one.

Oliver, who finished second in the 400m, took first place in the long jump with a leap of 5.08m. His teammate Kaviana Sands took the girls A long jump with a leap of 4.44m.

Kiano Bain of James A Pinder took the boys A shot put with a throw of 9.58m while Laquay Thompson of the Eleuthera Destroyers took first in the girls C softball throw with a toss of 23.61s.

The schedule for day two, which gets underway at 10am, will include the 100m, 400m, Softball Throw, Long Jump, Triple Jump and 4x100m relay.

Rahming said he has been encouraged by the growth of the meet in recent years.
