A MAN died at the Central Detective Unit after a woman, believed to be his girlfriend, drove him to the police station following an early morning shooting in the Soldier Road area.

His death pushed the year’s murder count to 100.

The man’s killing came nearly two weeks after his brother was gunned down in a similar manner. Police have not identified the victim, but The Tribune understands he is 20-year-old Shavaz “Doogie” Wray. Shavaz is the brother of 20-year-old Shaquan Wray who was murdered two weeks ago in the Farrington Road area.

According to police, Shaquan died in hospital on October 22 after he was shot while standing in his yard off Farrington Road.

Yesterday’s shooting occurred around 7:30am off Soldier Road near East Street, Chief Superintendent Paul Rolle said.

However, when police arrived on the scene, they found nothing.

A short while later, a woman showed up at the Central Detective Unit with a man inside her car suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

“Our information is that as they were driving along Soldier Road, two males emerged from the bushes on the side of the street just opposite a church near Blue Hill Road,” Chief Supt Rolle said.

“The men were wearing black masks over their face. The men began discharging shots into the vehicle striking the male passenger to the upper body,” he said.

“EMS responded here to CDU and pronounced the male dead. We understand after the shooting, the males got in a white Honda Odyssey and escaped.”

Mr Rolle said the female driver, who is believed to be the girlfriend of the victim, was taken into custody after police found a loaded 9mm pistol and a quantity of ammunition in her purse.

Police were tight-lipped when asked if the brothers’ murders were likely connected.

However, Chief Supt Rolle said “police have a good idea who they are looking for.”

Last week, National Security Minister Dr Bernard Nottage said the government had formulated new crime-fighting strategies.

He said the National Security Council of the Bahamas, chaired by Prime Minister Perry Christie, had agreed to new initiatives aimed at curbing the recent spike in certain types of criminal activity in New Providence.

However, officials have not released the details of these plans.
