NEW Providence hoteliers have made good on outstanding electricity bills, but an Abaco hotel is still in high arrears, Bahamas Electricity Corporation Chairman Leslie Miller confirmed yesterday.
Mr Miller said the hotels have paid a “few million dollars” to BEC since his recent threat of disconnection to three hotels in western New Providence.
“We have a relationship with them now,” he said.
“I have met with the hoteliers and they have agreed to step forward to the plate and bring their bills current, and they have been doing so. Except we have a problem with one of the hotels in Abaco that we need to deal with.”
Mr Miller said: “(Abaco hotel) that’s the major outstanding one, but in New Providence the hotels are in fact responding very well to the needs of BEC.”
Speaking outside the House of Assembly yesterday, Mr Miller gave an update on the corporation’s fuel debts. Mr Miller had previously warned that there would be a country-wide blackout if BEC was not able to reduce its debts by the end of September.
Mr Miller said BEC has been making weekly payments of $7m to Shell West, the company that supplies the corporation’s fuel.
“We’ll be getting our fuel this week. The fuel will be coming in so we’re in good shape,” he said.

What an ignoramus this fella Miller is. I wouldn't trust any kind of relationship he claims to have developed with the hotels for the benefit of BEC! This tax dodger and perpetually seriously delinquent payer of his owns bills is not be trusted, period! He is no different than Ishmael Lightbourne and Lady Pindling, two other infamous tax dodgers who Christie happily believes hard working taxpayers like you and me should have to pay even more taxes for because they choose not to pay their taxes. I can only imagine the delinquent hotel owners laughing when they see Miller coming their way......they know only too well they can get the better of him and our government in the long term at the expense of hard working Bahamians who pay their bills on time!!
