PARENTS on Grand Cay staged a demonstration and kept their children out of school on Tuesday to protest the shortage of teachers at the island’s government school.

According to reports, the Grand Cay All-Age School is in need of two teachers in critical subject areas and parents are fed up with the Ministry of Education’s failure to fill the vacancies for about a month.

Steve Russell, the PTA president, told ZNS news that the PTA Board and parents think the children are being short-changed and want the vacancies filled. “We have been without sufficient teachers for too long and it appears that the Ministry is dragging its feet. We ended the last term without sufficient teachers and here is a new term – a month has gone and we still have the same problem,” he said.

It was reported that the delay in the vetting process conducted by the police has caused a delay. It is expected that the teaching positions will be filled by next week.
