THE Holland College Hurricanes have a firm grasp on top spot in the Atlantic Football League and, this weekend, moved to within one win from a first place finish and the league pennant.

The Hurricanes swept to a 50-24 win on the road over the University of New Brunswick Red Bombers to move to 4-0 on the season while UNB fell to 1-3.

Each game has seen different Bahamians on the roster make outstanding contributions on the field, this week led by Eugene McMinns and defensive captain Cardell Rolle.

McMinns caught two touchdowns in the second half while Rolle was one of the leaders on run defence and added an interception.

The Hurricanes took an early 8-3 lead in the first quarter and with the Bombers driving near midfield, Rolle picked off a pass but was tripped up before he could manage a return.

Holland led 29-17 at the half.

The passing game continued to pay big dividends for the Hurricanes in the second half when Xavier Hanna’s reception converted a second and long play. Two plays later, McMinns caught a deep pass play down the sideline for a touchdown and a 36-17 Hurricanes lead.

In the fourth quarter, McMinns caught his second touchdown when he took a screen pass, duped several defenders and outran the secondary for an 85-yard score.

In their previous meeting this season, the Hurricanes beat the Red Bombers 37-20. Next Saturday, the Hurricanes will face the UNB Saint John Seawolves, at 1pm.

A win and a 5-0 record will guarantee the Hurricanes will host a playoff game and first place in the league.
