THE Bahamas Flag Football League (BFFL) is set to stage its fifth annual invitational tournament over the holiday weekend at the Winton Rugby Field.
Returning to defend their titles will be current BFFL men’s champions, the Findlandia Predators, and in the women’s division the Summit Academy Ravens look to keep hold of their crown. Last year was the first time that both teams from the BFFL won the local invitational.
A total of 11 teams will participate - seven men’s and four women’s teams from the New Providence and the Grand Bahama leagues.
In the men’s division, the BFFL teams participating include A Sure Win Team Elite, Avengers, RBC Lions, Orry J Sands Spartans, Finlandia Predators and from the Grand Bahamas Flag Football League (GBFFL) the Sands Bears and three-times tournament and defending GBFFL champions, Frecon Alliance.
In the women division the Boomer G’s Bobcats, Johnson’s Trucking Lady Spartans and the Summit Academy Ravens represent the BFFL while the MLM Eagles will represent the GBFFL.
BFFL Vice President, John-Marc Nutt, said the tournament serves several purposes to supplement the growth of the sport.
“We know the league is growing in popularity every year with our regular season, but the invitational is always very important to us because it keeps the excitement around the sport alive just about year round,” he said.
“Teams have not stopped practicing since the season ended in July so we expect a well-played tournament this weekend. Many teams use this tournament as a stepping stone to set the tone for the regular season and it is always great to get the inter-island rivalry going between New Providence and Grand Bahama.”
Games will commence at noon on Saturday and the popular tournament, sponsored by BTC, runs through to Monday. Admission will be $2 for persons over the age of 12.
