KNIGHTS TAKE SECOND PLACE

THE Niagara College Knights men’s basketball team finished runners-up in the 20th annual SLC Vikings tournament at the weekend.

Game one saw the Knights face John Abbott College and in a lopsided game the Knights ran out 92-65 winners. At half time, the Knights led 39-26 and never looked back. Led by fifth year forward Ryan Christie (Hamilton) with a team high 20 points and 14 rebounds, the Knights also had a useful contribution from freshman forward Delroy Grandison (Kingston, Jamaica) of 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Game two was tougher match as the Knights edged the Lambton Lions 72-70. Trailing by four points into the fourth quarter, Niagara rallied behind freshman Trevon Ash (San Diego) and his team high 21 points helped pull out the win.

In the championship game, the Knights faced the defending OCAA West champions, the Mohawk Mountaineers. After a hard -ought 40 minutes, the Knights lost 81-77, taking home the silver medal.

Grandison was named one of the tournament All-Stars.

With last season’s dismal 3-15 record behind them, the Niagara College men’s basketball programme is now regarded as one of the best in the province. A silver medal finish is the start of what should be an exciting 2014 season.

The Knights were scheduled to host the Durham Lords at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre last night.
