A LOCAL sorority has created a campaign that encourages young people to register to vote and become educated about national issues.
The Eta Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc kicked off its “Pledge to REG” initiative recently that targets young Bahamians.
“The message is very simple: ‘You are not too young to pledge to register, you are not too young to get involved in the issues of our country.’ This initiative promises to be a signature programme of our chapter as it is vital to our nation’s youth and democratic practices,” said Alana Ingraham, president of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter.
To register for the campaign, interested persons should visit www.akaetapsiomega.com and click the Pledge To REG button. On the Pledge to REG page, a commitment statement and form is available for individuals to submit. The Eta Psi Omega Chapter will then share a monthly e-blast with all registrants on national issues, election procedures, registration processes, etc.
On a registrant’s 18th birthday, they are encouraged to go and get registered. As an incentive, they are asked to submit a photo holding their voter’s card and they will receive a birthday present from the chapter.
“We want to empower young people to vote, because their vote has power. During this campaign, we want to encourage young people to be as excited about their voter’s card as they are about their driver’s license,” said D’Asante Beneby, social justice and human rights chair of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter.
