For the second consecutive BAISS game the St Augustine’s College junior boys softball team needed only three innings to take out their opponents as “The Big Red Machine” destroyed St John’s Giants 11-1 yesterday.
SAC brought their big bats to the field, leaving the Giants’ pitcher completely flustered on the mound. The St John’s defence at times looked totally lost, committing a number of errors.
During the first inning Kennan Ennis, of SAC, hit a low pitch deep to centre field, driving in two runs.
Not to be outdone, Tnige Wallace and experienced hitter Chartom Ferguson brought their “A” game, taking the Giants’ pitcher to task.
Wallace indicated that his team’s strong play was due to their extreme confidence. “We wanted to go out there and have some fun,” he said. “We beat that team last year, so we knew what to expect.”
Ferguson was out to prove that his performance last Thursday against Nassau Christian Academy was no fluke. He certainly did that yesterday, taking it to St John’s every at bat including his game-ending double play, which scored the final two runs making it possible for the game to be called in the third.
“All game I was hitting the ball well, so during my last at bat I wanted to do what I do best. I wanted to hit the ball,” he said.
Pitcher Austin Knowles, the leader of SAC’s defensive performance, which limited the Giants to one run, added: “The key today defensively was to pitch for my team, not for myself. Put the ball in a position so that my teammates could make a play on it.”
SAC’s record now stands at 2-2 after starting the season with two tough losses. St John’s with this loss drops even lower in the standings.
Will any team take the SAC junior boys to the fourth inning? The Kingsway Academy Saints will be next to try.
