New carnival group builds its 'Empire of Love'

BY KORTNEY RODGERS

A NEW carnival group is inviting Bahamians to be a part of its “mighty love empire” in an effort to showcase the myriad of talent that exists in the country at next year’s inaugural Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival.

Inspired by Arthur Gibson, former chairman of the Junkanoo Corporation of New Providence (JCNP) and leader of the One Love Soldiers, the Empire of Love Carnival Band got its start in June of this year.

The group’s objective is to encourage persons from the Junkanoo and the business communities to see the cultural and entrepreneurial opportunities available in this venture.

“The uniqueness of the Empire of Love is in the uniqueness of its board of directors and the talent and dedication that they bring to the organisation.

“Additionally, the Empire of Love is unique in their approach to this new expression,” Mr Gibson said.

The group of about 120 members is determined to explore their creativity as they focus on making costumes that are “unique, intricate and properly constructed”.

The band also welcomes all persons to “come for the experience, but stay for the love” by participating in various events hosted by the Carnival Commission and by also hosting their own events. Their first Carnival teaser was held on October 11 at the band’s headquarters located at #32 Arawak Avenue off Jerome Avenue. The event was well-attended and fulfilled its purpose to introduce the Empire of Love to the community, the band said.

The band also received favourable response from attendees whom the group said “were impressed with the quality of costuming presented” at the Roach March Carnival Expo.

In addition to their “Each One Reach One” advertisement strategy, the Empire of Love Carnival Band will continue to host a series of teasers to attract more potential members. The group will also use traditional forms of media to promote the positive aspects of its endeavour.

“There are many positive attributes to a Junkanoo Carnival Festival. However, the main focus should be on Junkanoo Carnival as an addition to the country’s cultural expression rather than a replacement of Junkanoo. Once this issue is properly addressed, there will be many more interested persons,” the group said.

The Empire of Love’s second Carnival teaser is scheduled for November 1 at 8pm at the band’s headquarters. To receive more information and updates about the Empire of Love Carnival Band, follow their Facebook page (Empire of Love) or e-mail empireoflovecarnival@gmail.com.
