THE last unbeaten record in BAISS senior girls softball has fallen after the Queen’s College Comets shocked St Augustine’s College 11-7 yesterday.
The ‘Big Red Machines’ were looking to push their record to 4-0 on the year but were denied by the Comets and pitcher Dawanya Pratt. SAC entered yesterday’s game averaging 16 runs per contest, but their offence misfired.
Pratt left nothing to chance, throwing a succession of powerful pitches. With her father, Dawayne, coaching from the stands she shone in the game’s biggest moments.
“This game was tough,” she said. “I told my catcher that we could do this, we just had to remain focused and ready.”
The key hit of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kimona Wilson punished a strong fast ball, driving it to left field and bringing in a run to stretch the Comets lead.
However, the moment of the game came on SAC’s last at bat. Comets pitcher Pratt delivered a fine strikeout, sending the Comets supporters into a frenzy and according to catcher Quenalisa Albury “the Big Red Machine broke down in Comet country”.
Comets Coach Sandra Hobbs said: “We already dropped two games this year, we couldn’t take another loss. We knew SAC was undefeated so I told the girls use this game to judge how good we are.”
Team captains Paige Carter and Wallica McKinney echoed the coaches’ statements, claiming that the effort giving in yesterday’s game was “amazing”.
Carter said: “Today we wanted to prove how good we could be. As a team we were tired but we stepped up and won this big game.” And McKinney added: “Our team proved that we can take out any team, we gave it our all and we got great results.”
