OFFICIALS are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed at least 10 wooden structures in what police believe was a shanty town off Fire Trail Road.
According to Fire Services Chief Walter Evans, the fire began shortly after 9am yesterday and quickly tore through the makeshift homes, burning them to the ground.
“Around 10am, we sent several units in response to reports that several structures were on fire.
“When officers arrived on the scene, they met around 10 homes fully ablaze. Officers were able to put out the fire, but the homes were completely destroyed,” he said.
“At this time we are not sure if the homes were occupied or how many have been occupied.
“There were also signs that construction was being carried out on the property. It appears to be a shanty town.
“The homes were wooden with no electricity and no water, just walls and a tin roof.”
Supt Evans said the cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigations are continuing.
According to residents of the area, about four people lived in some of the homes that were destroyed.
