Students blessed during back-to-school service at St James

THE beginning of September is traditionally back-to-school time in the Bahamas, and there is always an air of excitement. Back-to-school provides an opportunity for many students to start afresh and turn over a new leaf. Others it is an opportunity to pick up where they left off last school year.

Last Sunday, St James Anglican Church in Adelaide held its back-to-school church service and ceremonies. Students were decked out in their new uniforms as they proudly displayed their school’s colours.

Students heard from Meko Grant who recited a poem. Joel R Lewis from the Ministry of Education and Ishmael Smith from Programme SURE gave candid advice, not only for the children, but parents as well. They were encouraged to be disciplined in their approach to their studies and do their best.

The prayers and special blessings were offered for all students, parents and teachers by the parish priest, Father Andrew Toppin.

Nikita Wells-Thompson added to the flavour of the service with two selections that were well received by the congregation. Each child was given school supplies.

St James Anglican Church as always been involved in education in the Adelaide community. The church had the first school in the Village for the newly freed slaves in the 19th century.

It is hoped that in the near future a home work centre and a computer lab will be established for the children of Adelaide.
