THE Holland College Hurricanes were outplayed in their lone preseason exhibition game, but several Bahamian players showed their potential to bright spots for the team as they look to repeat as Atlantic Football League champions.
The Hurricanes fell 34-9 to NCAA Division III programme, the Maritime Academy Mariners on the road Saturday in Castine, Maine.
First-year back Jamaal Storr led the Hurricanes with 128 all purpose yards from scrimmage.
The former two-time Commonwealth American Football League MVP carried the ball 15 times for 69 yards, an average of 4.6 yards per carry and in the air he had two receptions for 57 yards. Xavier Hanna caught two receptions for 33 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown. Defensively, linebacker Cardell Rolle finished with eight tackles while defensive end Revello Williamson finished with three.
In special teams play, Eugene McMinns returned three kicks for 32 yards and also added two special teams tackles.
It was the first-ever meeting between the Mariners and the Hurricanes in a battle for the Kongsberg Cup.
For the game, the Hurricanes generated 320 yards on offence to the Mariners’ 376 yards.
The inability to punch it in to the end zone, combined with 4 turnovers and 13 penalties, hampered the offensive attack.
The Hurricanes open up their regular season on the road 4pm September 13 against the UNB Saint John Seawolves, a rematch of last year’s AFL championship game.
The team is scheduled to host their home-opener 1pm Sunday at MacAdam Field, UPEI Alumni Canada Place.
The Hurricanes captured the Moosehead Cup, given to the Atlantic Football League champions, with a 20-12 win over the St John Seawolves. They finished the season at 4-4-1 in 2013, winning two of their final three games.
The Hurricanes boasted 11 Bahamians on their roster in the 2013 season.
