THE Holland College Hurricanes’ quest for a second consecutive and third Atlantic Football League title in school history got off to a promising start in the season opener.

The Hurricanes won the rematch of last year’s championship game with a dominant 36-13 win over the UNB St John Seawolves in New Brunswick, Canada.

Ten Bahamians are on the Hurricanes’ roster this season and they made an immediate impact in week one.

The group includes returning stars - linebacker Cardell Rolle, wide recicvers Eugene McMinns and Xavier Hanna, defensive lineman Dale Knowles and Revello Williamson, defensive back Arrien MacDonald, along with newcomers running back Jamal Storr, defensive lineman D’aiquin Wilmore and offensive lineman Shelton Williams.

Storr was a force on the ground with two rushing touchdowns while McMinns caught a another score.

Both teams got off to a slow start and the Seawolves took an 8-0 lead.

The Hurricanes converted a blocked punt into a score when McMinns capped off the drive with the 35-yard touchdown reception from Christian Hackney.

Storr sparked the go-ahead drive for the Hurricanes with a big kickoff return to place his team just outside the redzone and they took a 15-10 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Storr scored both of his touchdown runs and the Hurricanes added a field goal to take a 29-13 lead into the fourth.

The Hurricanes’ home opener will be a matchup against the UNB Fredericton Red Bombers at McAdam Field on September 21.

The Red Bombers lost their season opener this weekend to the Dalhousie Tigers, 31-25.

The Hurricanes captured the Moosehead Cup, given to the Atlantic Football League champions, with a 20-12 win over the St John Seawolves. They finished the season at 4-4-1 in 2013, winning two of their final three games.

The Hurricanes boasted 11 Bahamians on their roster in the 2013 season and in February, the school’s athletic department hosted a series of combines with the aim of increasing that number for this season.
