SCORE another dominant performance for the Holland College Hurricanes Football Club, powered by several standout plays from Bahamian student-athletes on offence, defence and special teams.
The defending Atlantic Football League Champions moved to 3-0 on the season with a 42-15 home win over the Dalhousie Tigers at the UPEI Canada Games Alumni Place, in PEI, Canada.
Defensive end Revello Williamson Jr led the charge defensively with a sack, an interception and two quarterback hurries.
All purpose player Eugene McMinns had four receptions at wide receiver, returned two punts and created the spark on special teams which helped the Hurricanes overcome a sluggish start.
The Tigers drove the ball downfield on their opening possession to take a 7-0 lead and appeared to grab hold of the momentum when they were able to force an interception just two plays later.
The Hurricanes got back on track when they were able to force a turnover on downs of their own and on the ensuing punt, McMinns recovered the fumble by the Dalhousie returner to place his team immediately in scoring position near the goal line.
The Hurricanes would score the equaliser on a quarterback sneak with just under two minutes left to play in the quarter.
After Hurricanes defence forced another stop, running back Jamal Storr came alive with a 35-yard run to place the Hurricanes in the red zone.
Just two plays into the second quarter, the Hurricanes would score the go ahead touchdown through the air, 14-7.
With the Tigers threatening in Holland territory after a big pass play, Williamson came through with a key sack that essentially ended the Tigers’ drive. Dalhousie would score on a field goal, 14-10.
The third quarter was a slow start for the Hurricanes after two stifled possessions, Xavier Hanna caught a deep pass down the sideline for a first down to place Holland in the red zone.
Storr would carry the ball for a two yard gain on the next play but would come up injured on the play and did not return until late in the fourth quarter. Holland would cap the drive with another touchdown pass for a 21-11 lead.
With the Tigers threatening once again, this time at the goal line, defensive captain Cardell Rolle deflected a pass on third down to prevent the touchdown and forced the Tigers to settle for a field goal.
The fourth quarter was all Hurricanes as Storr re-entered the game late in the fourth quarter and immediately broke a 20-yard run.
Holland will attempt to move to 4-0 next weekend when they face the UNB Red Bombers October 4.
