SOME people are their own worst enemy. They speak negatively about their circumstances, quit endevours because they do not believe they have what it takes to accomplish their goals and are easily discouraged even by minute challenges.

A wrong and negative way of thinking, Grand Bahama author Denika Carothers believes, is what prevents people from living their best lives and reaching their full potential. Through her latest book, “Who In The Hell Do You Think You Are”, Denika seeks to help people change the way they think and ultimately change the direction of their lives.

As a conflict mediation consultant and life coach, Denika helps people identify barriers in their life that limit them. The book, which was launched last week, is simply an extension of her life coaching and a way for her to reach more people than she would ordinarily.

“My new book was an inspiration from my heart because I help people to resolve conflict in various areas of their life, whether it is emotional, mental, spiritual or physical. But one of things that I have come to learn in my life journey is that we truly have the power to create our own personal heaven or our own personal hell. As a conflict mediation consultant I deal with people all the time who believe that their lives are screwed up in one way or another,” she told Tribune Woman.

Denika said a lot of those persons who seek her help do not realise how they participate in the “screw up” and how much of it has to do with the way they think.

“Our thoughts create our beliefs and our beliefs create our truth. So what is true for me may not necessarily be true for someone else, but what is true for me is based on my thought process. Our thoughts come from three places. They come from our experiences, our conditioning and our culture. So someone’s thoughts and truths can be very different from mine based on how we were raised, the things we were exposed to and what influences us,” she said.

“So this book was an effort to help people be empowered, to transform their own lives, because at the end of the day the only person who truly has control over our lives is us as individuals. We are so quick to blame people outside of ourselves and this book is going to help people understand that the only person that truly has power over their lives is themselves.”

Denika grew up in the television and recording industry. She is no stranger to the spotlight, having been involved in music, radio and television from the early age of 15 by way of her father, Frank Penn. When she was 23, she along with her sister Kristin hosted a daily, one-hour radio show called “Inside Bahamian Music”. The show ran for 10 years.

Denika also hosted a television ministry programme called “The Happy Hour Experience” along with her father. It was during her time hosting the talk show that she found her purpose and passion to help guide people who find themselves stuck.

Since then, she has relocated to Houston, Texas, with two of her children, after Hurricane Jeanne destroyed her home in 2004.
