THE second edition of the Chickcharney Challenge is in the books and event organisers are optimistic about its growth and the growth of local obstacle course racing in the near future.

Dubbed as a challenge more so than a race, scores of participants completed Chickcharney Challenge: The Revenge - Mud Guts and Glory at Clifton Heritage Park on Sunday morning.

The event was presented by the Chickcharney Chirren and Suntee and the numbers from this weekend surpassed the numbers from February’s inaugural event.

Event coordinator Chester Robards said the success of the race was evident on the general response from the participants.

The race is designed  to test both physical and mental strength and endurance through various running, crawling, pulling and lifting exercises.

Part of the proceeds of the event will again benefit the Bahamas National Council for Disabilities.

“It’s a great outdoor activity and people are not spending enough time outdoors doing both fun and challenging activities. Clifton Heritage Park is a great spot and the course allows you to experience the beauty the park has to offer,” Robards said.

“They loved Clifton Heritage Park, a lot of people have never been there, ever. I have spoken to a lot of people who have done similar challenges in the United States and they thought ours was more intense and difficult than things they have done, which was flattering but at the same time a testament to where they think they want to be in terms of fitness.”

Obstacles included the “Ripped Seam Beam, Chickcharney Channel, Muddersic” and the “Help Me Bey.”

After the positive feedback from the inaugural event in April, Robards said his group was eager to return with a greater challenge.

“This is not a race, it’s a personal challenge. I push the team aspect even though individuals can do it, because it is so fun getting dirty and helping your friends getting over an obstacle. We had people as old as in their 50s doing the challenge,” he said.

For future editions of the event, the Chickcharney Chirren pledge to add even more obstacles and challenges and continue to bring a new health and fitness experience to the Bahamas with the series of obstacles set over a three-mile long course.

Event sponsors included Clifton Heritage Park, Pappa Surf, Jemi Health and Wellness, Marco’s Pizza, Wendy’s and The Tribune.
