ATTORNEY General Allyson Maynard Gibson yesterday heralded the career of Arthur Dion Hanna Jr, who recently retired as director of legal aid at the Eugene Dupuch Law School.
Mr Hanna, son of former Governor General Arthur Dion Hanna Sr, officially retired last Friday after 37 years of service at the country’s first law school to pursue “personal interests”.
Mrs Maynard Gibson, at a press conference yesterday at the Office of the Attorney General, called his retirement another “red letter day” in the country.
“It would be remiss of us as patriots and as people who recognise there are Bahamians who step up to the plate everyday and make tremendous contributions to the development of our country not to acknowledge such a person as AD Hanna Jr,” she said. “I want to say that it would be very difficult for a chip to fall far from the block, and he is following in the noble footsteps of his father, who we recognise as one of the fathers of our nation and a tremendous patriot.”
Mr Hanna, who is also the older brother of Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna Martin, tearfully expressed his gratitude to those in the legal profession as well as the country at large for making his former job an enjoyable one.
“I’m like an old soldier,” he said tearfully. “I will never die, but I’m about to fade away. Now, this old soldier will fade away.”
