A MAN was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged in connection with a homicide that occurred last week.

Avard Dixon, 32, of Summer Haven, appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney on August 11 on a charge of stabbing to death 47-year-old Stephen Newbold on August 11.

According to initial police reports, Newbold got into an argument with a man known to him at an apartment complex on Baillou Hill Road South.

Police received a call that two men were involved in a fight, which resulted in one of the men being stabbed multiple times. Officers responded and on arrival found Newbold lying on the porch outside apartment six in a yellow building with multiple stab wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dixon was told that he would not be required to enter a plea to the charge until his appearance in the Supreme Court when the matter is forwarded there by the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment.

That presentation is scheduled for October 22 at his next Magistrate’s Court appearance.

He was denied bail and remanded to the Department of Correctional Services until such time.

However, he was advised of his right to apply for bail to the higher court.

Before the conclusion of the matter, Dixon’s lawyer – Roger Minnis – asked for his client to be seen by a physician immediately, once taken to the prison.

He claimed that his client suffered injuries while in police custody and had not been afforded access to medical attention.

Magistrate McKinney said it was mandatory for all new inmates to be examined upon arrival to the facility but, nonetheless, made a note of the request.
