IN COMMEMORATION of “Deliverance Day”, when the Free National Movement was first elected to power on August 19, 1992, the party is holding its Red Splash Taino Beach Family Fun Day and Thanksgiving Church Service on Grand Bahama this weekend.
David Thompson, chairman of the Grand Bahama FNM Council, said it was an historic moment in The Bahamas when the FNM defeated the ruling Progressive Liberal Party and became the government for the first time in the party’s history.
“August 19, 1992, became a defining moment in Bahamian history and today marks 23 years since the FNM, under the leadership of Hubert Ingraham, brought deliverance, transformation, and real change for all Bahamians and filled us all with exuberance and hope as a new day had come,” Mr Thompson said at the party’s headquarters.
Also in attendance were Neko Grant, MP for Central Grand Bahama; April Crowther-Gow, president of the Grand Bahama FNM Women’s Association, and Wilfred Bevans, chairman for Central Grand Bahama Association.
Mr Thompson highlighted the achievements of the FNM during its tenure in office, including better governance, improved healthcare, better education, enhanced justice, greater economic opportunities, upgraded infrastructure, deepened democracy, “freedom of the airways,” Family Island elected local government, social justice and international respect.
He noted that in commemoration of the party’s most significant victory at the polls in 1992, several events will take place, starting on Saturday, August 22, with the Red Splash Family Fun Day and free back to school supplies giveaway at Taino Beach.
There will be food and drinks on sale and various team competitions and awards.
At 1pm on Saturday, FNM Leader Dr Hubert Minnis will lead a motorcade from FNM headquarters to Taino Beach where he will join the festivities.
On Sunday, August 23, the FNM will attend the 9am worship service at Life Community Church in Caravel Beach. Also attending will be party leader Dr Minnis, present and past FNM parliamentarians, national party officers, constituency officers, supporters and friends.
The general public is also invited.
