HURRICANE Fred formed in the Atlantic on Monday, strengthening from a tropical storm as it approaches the Cape Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa.
The US National Hurricane Centre reported Fred's maximum sustained winds near 80mph but said gradual weakening is forecast to begin on Tuesday.
Hurricane Fred is centred about 40 miles east of Rabil in the Cape Verde Islands and is moving northwest near 12mph. The centre of Fred is forecast to move over or near the northwestern Cape Verde Islands later on Monday. A hurricane warning is in effect for the islands.
Fred is the sixth named storm of the Atlantic season and the second, after Danny, to develop into a hurricane.
