GEORGE Washington women’s basketball senior forward Jonquel Jones, of Grand Bahama, was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week for the week ending November 29, the league announced yesterday.
In addition, Jones was tabbed GWsports.com Colonial of the Week. She earned the weekly honour from the A-10 for the second week in a row and for the 10th time in her career, breaking GW Athletic Hall of famer Cathy Joens’ programme record set from 1999-2004.
Jones led GW to a 3-1 week with 18.3 points, 17.8 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while posting a double-double in each contest.
Her best game of the week came in the Colonials’ 81-77 double-overtime victory over No. 25/21 Iowa, when she scored 23 points and grabbed a school-record 26 rebounds, breaking a mark that had stood for 39 years.
The 26 rebounds matched the second-highest single-game total ever by a player from the Atlantic 10 and are the most by an NCAA player in any division -- men’s or women’s -- this season.
Jones had a double-double midway through the second quarter, and she added four blocks, three assists and two steals against the Hawkeyes. The preseason Wooden Award candidate was clutch down the stretch, making a layup with 21 seconds remaining to force a second overtime, then scoring back-to-back buckets to build a four-point margin with 43 seconds left as the Colonials took the lead for good.
The following day, Jones had 17 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks against Wright State and topped 800 rebounds for her career. The Freeport, Bahamas, native also tallied 20 points, 13 rebounds and three assists against Houston in the opening game of the Lone Star Showcase to average an eye-popping 20.0 points and 19.3 rebounds plus 2.7 blocks, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals in the tournament’s three games.
Additionally, Jones opened the week with 13 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks, three assists and three steals in a win at Fresno State.
For the season, the senior is the nation’s third-leading rebounder with 15.0 boards per game to go with 17.1 points per contest. She has tallied five straight double-doubles, tops in the Atlantic 10 and tied for third-most nationally.
Jones shares the Player of the Week award with Duquesne’s April Robinson.
With junior Caira Washington’s recognition for the first week of the season, it marks the first time ever that the Colonials have been honoured for the first three weeks of the season.
Jones and the Colonials are slated to return to action 7pm Thursday when they host Florida Gulf Coast at the Charles E Smith Center.
