GEORGE Washington women’s basketball senior forward Jonquel Jones, from Grand Bahama, was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the third week in a row, the league announced yesterday. The award covers games played November 30 to December 6.
Jones averaged 19.5 points, 19.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 blocks per game while shooting 50 per cent (18-for-36) from the field in two games for GW.
The native of Freeport, Bahamas, opened the week with her second 20/20 performance in three games with 21 points and 21 rebounds plus four blocks, three steals and two assists against Florida Gulf Coast, making 10-of-21 shots from the floor.
Jones then notched her seventh straight double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds plus five assists and two blocked shots while shooting 53.3 per cent (8-for-15) in GW’s come-from behind victory at Memphis. She scored 14 points in the second half as the Colonials rallied from a 16-point second-quarter deficit.
The nation’s leading rebounder and a preseason candidate for the John R Wooden and Ann Meyers Drysdale awards, Jones is averaging 17.7 points and 15.9 rebounds per game this season and moved into ninth place on GW’s all-time list with 768 rebounds in her three years as a Colonial.
The Player of the Week award is the 11th of Jones’ career, a GW women’s basketball record. With junior Caira Washington’s recognition for the first week of the season, the Colonials have now been honoured for four consecutive weeks to start the 2015-16 campaign.
Jones and the Colonials return to action 2pm Sunday when they host Villanova at the Charles E Smith Center.
