Nation's human rights shame

EDITOR, The Tribune.

As a member of the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association, I find it deplorable that Minister Fred Mitchell can sing the praises of The Bahamas as a country committed to upholding human rights in the present political circumstances.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of people are living in the Bahamas as”stateless” persons because of antiquated and discriminatory laws which prevent them from gaining citizenship by birth.

Thousands of families, looking to raise themselves out of poverty by working hard, are being torn apart in midnight raids by immigration.

Officers in authority are taking advantage of detainees in deplorable, inhumane conditions.

Gays and lesbians are openly treated as scum.

Women are often treated as less than their male counterparts in all aspects of law and every day society.

And now Minister Miller wishes to prevent children from attaining an education!

I do not see how any of these actions show The Bahamas as being an active participant in human rights. Quite the opposite actually.

I see the current human rights situation in my country as bordering on the beginnings of political unrest!
