GRAND Bahama tour operator Hadley Forbes has been named the “Caribbean’s Leading Tour Operator” by Carnival Cruise Lines.
Mr Forbes, operator of Freeport Bahamas Adventures Limited, has been providing tours to cruise passengers for many years on Grand Bahama.
Grand Bahama Port Authority officials congratulated Mr Forbes, and added that creating diverse and unique tour experiences is necessary for Grand Bahama.
“This award is a meaningful achievement for the island. It demonstrates our commitment to delivering quality tours and guest experiences for passengers who visit,” said GBPA President Ian Rolle.
He said that the cruise industry continues to be the economic driver for tourism in the Caribbean region.
“While sea, sun and sand may be deciding factors; passengers no longer want a simple tour, but a destination experience as well. The competition is fierce and to be rated number one or the most popular in any area of the industry is a major accomplishment,” Mr Rolle said.
He noted that various tour operators have worked hard to increase the island’s product offerings.
He believes that delivering superior customer service will help Freeport, which has struggled with cruise rankings over the years, to improve.
According to reports, more than a million passengers disembark at the Lucayan Harbour Cruise Port annually by conventional cruises, day and fast ferries. Carnival Cruise Lines accounts for the lion’s share of ships calling at the port.
Derek Newbold, GBPA’s Senior Manager for Business Development and Invest Grand Bahama, said the cruise industry is a major economic contributor for the country.
He noted that there have been improvements in the quality of tour offerings in recent years in Freeport.
“This certainly bodes well for the tourism sector and local economy,” added Mr Newbold. “Freeport tour operators have been consistent in introducing new and unique activities for guests; and that it is promising to see a local operator receive such a prestigious award.”
Even though 2013 industry reports rated the Caribbean and The Bahamas as dominant cruise destination for passengers, Mr Newbold stated that local tour operators must meet and exceed passenger expectations in tour options, shopping, dining, and other activities in order to improve the island’s ranking.
