WHILE all the focus has been on the amazing Wahoo season and the early start to the Mahi Mahi season, it is easy to overlook fly fishing in The Bahamas, one of the top three destinations in the world for the sport.
Most islands have flats on the south and east side, well protected and abundant with Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon. The flats can either be accessed by foot or you can hire a guide and cruise the flats in a skiff.
The Bahamas has a long history of top-notch fly fishing guides dating back to the famous “Bonefish Foley” in Grand Bahama, whose list of clients included Dr Martin Luther King Jr, former US president Richard Nixon, the late Prince Rainier of Monaco, author Ernest Hemingway, actors Robert Taylor and Curt Gowdy and actress Lana Turner.
The guides have been in action recently: Charles Albury took a nice Permit in Cherokee, Abaco; Mark Cartwright put his guest on the Bonefish in Long Island; and Clint Kemp landed a Barracuda near Schooner Bay, Abaco.
For a sample of the spectacular fishing to be had in The Bahamas, expert advice, tournament dates and results, informative features and photo galleries visit the BSFN page at tribune242.com or bahamassportfishingnetwork.com. BSFN’s fifth slideshow with US Today Travel has been released this week and is expected to take the total number of views for the series past the two milion mark. The slideshow can be viewed on USA Today’s website in the Travel section at experience.usatoday.com.
