Bahamas IC team to face US for SG Trophy

WITH their fourth consecutive victory coming over the International Team, the Bahamas IC team is all set to meet the US today to decide the winner of The SG Trophy at the Breezes SuperClub tennis courts.

In Thursday’s match, the Bahamas team of John Antonas and Mas Kimball surprisingly lost the opening match to the International team causing a bit of concern. The ladies team of Larikah Russell and Sue Kimball then levelled the tie up for the Bahamas.

This was followed by another men’s doubles in which Neil Mactaggart and Kit Spencer had a slow start but came back to win and put the Bahamas 2-1 up.

Next up was a mixed doubles with Kim O’Kelly (Cartwright) and Kit Spencer, who after losing the first set on a 7-6 tie break, came back to win the second set and then the third set to ensure an overall fourth win in four days for the Bahamas.

In the last match, John Antonas and Larikah Russell won to give the Bahamas a comfortable 4-1 victory after a worrying start.

The strong USA team also continued their winning ways with a defeat of Barbados and all looks set for an exciting finish to the week.

Also today, Barbados will play Canada to decide the third and fourth places while Great Britain will play the International team for fifth and sixth places.

This is the third time this event has been held in the Bahamas and in addition to an excellent week of tennis played in the IC spirit of “Hands across the net, friendship across the ocean” it has provided over 1,000 overnight stays to the Bahamas tourist industry and Breezes Superclubs where the event has been held.
