TRACK

BAAA RELAYS POSTPONED

THE Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations has confirmed that its National High School Relay has been postponed for this weekend at the original Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

BAAA president Mike Sands said that as a result of the 2015 IAAF World Relays, the Local Organising Committee, in its preparation for this year’s event, will be hosting a ‘Test Event’ April 17-18 as was done last year.

“In this regard, our ‘partners’ have requested that we consider deferring this weekend’s High School Relays to the aforementioned dates,” Sands said. “This ‘partnership’ seeks to reduce the cost borne by the Grand Bahama and Family Island athletes and officials by combining these two events and achieving maximum return.

“As you are also no doubt aware, the ‘Test Event’ serves as the qualifying events for high school teams to gain a berth in the much anticipated component of the World Relays, which promises to be much bigger and better than the 2014 edition.”

The World Relays’ LOC has committed to underwriting the cost of hosting this event and has further undertaken to cover expenses of the Grand Bahama and Family Island teams that qualify to participate in the World Relays.

“We sincerely apologise for such a short notice and hope that you will see the benefit of this decision and give it your fullest support,” Sands said. “It should be noted that the respective schools that have registered has been notified.”

From a coaching perspective, Sands said there’s a suggestion being advanced that an ‘All Comers’ meet should fill the void. He said the BAAA encourages and would support this initiative.
