I read Tall Pine MP Leslie Miller’s comments on marriage equality in the United States. The last person any right-thinking Bahamian should listen to on matters of equality is Miller.

Leslie Miller is a bigot. He is a sexist who through his words and actions hasn’t demonstrated that he believes that men and women are equal. This is the man who aggressively opposed gender equality in our constitution. He only changed his mind after his disgusting comments in the House of Assembly about domestic violence and brutally beating up women.

We should recall those comments. It was reported that he said in reference to a matter being debated:

“That’s like beating your wife or your girlfriend every time you go home. You just beat her for looking at her. I love ya. Boom, boom, boom. I had a girlfriend like that.

“When I didn’t beat her she used to tell me I ain’t love her no more cause I don’t hit her. But seriously I had one like that. I had one. She used to tell me.”

When House Speaker Dr Kendal Major responded, “We know that you’re joking with that,” Miller said, “He was ‘serious with that.”

Miller went on to say, “I tell her I get tired, man. My hands hurting a little bit … give me a break.”

Give us all a break, Mr Miller. You are the very last person Bahamians should take moral or ethical advice from on just about anything, including the equality of all of God’s children made in His image and likeness, including men and women and gay and straight people.

We will move past the day when bigots like Leslie Miller get to tell us who is equal constitutionally. Already today and in the light of history, Miller is a dinosaur who thinks that it is funny to talk about beating up women, and to treat gays and lesbians like second class citizens.
