Gay marriage

EDITOR, The Tribune.

With the recent ruling in the United States Supreme Court about gay marriage, we are on the verge of a paradigm shift in our nation with gay advocacy groups pushing for equality.

They will be influenced by international bodies whose countries already have civil liberties and laws enacting the legalisation of gay marriage.

We already know that when America has the cold, the Bahamas catches the flu. No pun intended, but the trickle effect of this issue is very predictable.

There may very well be more desensitisation to gay marriage through foreign interest groups who will want to bring their lifestyle to the Bahamian public.

Our nation will not be open to this issue at first with our Christian advocacy groups having their presence felt in the political sphere.

Unlike the United States, we have not totally turned away from Judeo-Christian values, having God omitted from the constitution, and the recent ruling of same-sex marriage.

However, expect to see an increased desensitisation to this topic all-around as our people are more exposed to this proliferation of civil liberties in the US.

Pressure from the outside is good, and hopefully our legislators will uphold the public’s collective view on this issue when it is brought to the forefront.

I wish to remain anonymous.
