The 10th annual edition of the Kevin Johnson Developmental Basketball Camp is currently underway at the CI Gibson Gymnasium.

The camp, which will conclude this week, places a focus on preparing young players for their upcoming seasons or for playing the game at the next level with prospective scholarships.

In previous interviews with The Tribune, Johnson outlined his goal for the camp during a busy summer period for student athletes.

“We want to keep these young men busy during the summer months and hopefully, a lot of them will get scholarship opportunities for schools. There is a lot going on so if for a few hours we can keep them busy doing something constructive it’s all about keeping them focused and doing the right things,” he said. “We have speakers to talk to them about life, about God, keeping them focused and doing the right things.”

The camp, which has been in existence since 2005, not only works to enhance the athletic skill of our nation’s youth, but also to provide them with the discipline, structure and guidance needed to help them become productive and focused citizens.

Johnson, the longtime head coach for the CI Gibson Rattlers, has led the team to five Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic titles.

His programme works hand in hand with Mark Hanna, head coach for the DW Davis Royals. “All summer we work along with the Kevin Johnson Development Camp so they play all summer in tournaments and camps. These guys are basketball hungry,” Hanna previously said of his Royals players.

The team members participated in an inter-camp tournament played out this weekend, featuring play in the mini, junior and intermediate divisions.
