GRAND Bahama swimmer Joanna Evans set a new national record in the women's 800m freestyle final at the Pan-American Games on Saturday night in Toronto, Canada.

Evans finished sixth in 8 minutes 37.18 seconds to better her own Bahamian best, finishing behind Sierra Schmidt, of the United States, who won in a Games record of 8.27.54.

The Bahamas celebrated their first ever gold medal at the Pan Am Games on Friday, when Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace won the women's 50m freestyle. She also won a bronze earlier in the week in 100m freestyle.
