A man was sentenced to 45 years behind bars on Friday for a murder committed five years ago.

Justice Bernard Turner yesterday told Rolin Alexis that he would serve his sentence at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services for murdering Deslin Nichols in 2011.

However, taking into consideration the amount of time the 25-year-old accused spent in custody – two years and four months – Justice Turner shortened Alexis' sentence to 42 years and eight months.

Justice Turner also took into account Alexis being a "young man" with a "clean criminal history" prior to the incident in question and “being gainfully employed”.

Nichols was reportedly shot multiple times as he sat in his vehicle at Florida Court, off Balfour Avenue. Prior to his death, he had reportedly eluded police for three years as they investigated the 2005 murder of Kirk "Tank Dog" Ferguson.
