Movies for millennials

By ETHAN KNOWLES

FILM meets finance next week in Nassau with “Night at the Movies”, a joint effort between the Bahamas international Film Festival and Bahamas Millennials Society.

The two organisations have arranged a special showing of “Up in the Air” for July 28 at Galleria Cinemas JFK aimed at “millennials”, people born after 1980 and before 2001 involved in the financial services industry.

“We truly enjoy teaming up with progressive organisations that always look for ways to create unique opportunities for others,” Leslie Vanderpool, Executive Director and Founder of Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF), said. “Our collaborative effort will impact the millennials, an important part of our community that bring new tendencies to cinema with creative ways of presenting films and telling stories.”

BIFF is a non-profit organisation committed to offering local Bahamians and international visitors a diverse repertoire of films from across the globe. Jason Reitman’s 2009 film “Up in the Air” stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, who travels the United States firing employees but finds his lifestyle threatened when faced with a new hire and possible love interest.

“Up in the Air is set against the backdrop of the most challenging economic downturn in recent times – and the main protagonist has the most difficult job – yet he unexpectedly finds purpose and acceptance at the end of it all,” said Aliya Allen, the CEO of the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB). “We found the theme a fitting one for the kind of adaptability necessary even in the most challenging circumstances, and certainly in the dynamic financial services industry.”

As a sponsor of the Bahamas Millennials Society

– a networking and mentoring club comprised of millennial workers in the financial services industry – BFSB is also helping to fund the event with co-sponsor Galleria Cinemas. A cocktail reception at 6pm with a $10 fee will precede the 7.30pm showing next Tuesday.
