A 28-year-old resident of Miami Street became the country's 89th murder victim of the year on Friday afternoon – just three days after he celebrated his birthday.
Police Chief Superintendent Paul Rolle said Jamal Bridgewater was walking along the Charles Vincent Street area around 2.20pm when two people in a black Honda Civic drove near him.
One of them got out of the car and pursued the victim, shooting him in the upper body, Mr Rolle said.
He added: "The men then drove off south on Charles Vincent Street and a short time ago our officers located the suspects' vehicle on Miami Street. This vehicle was reported stolen from a resident of the Fox Hill area this morning. So we have a team that will be dealing with that vehicle from here and are appealing to persons with info on this latest homicide to reach out to us."
Authorities have not determined a motive for the killing and do not yet know if it is connected to a recent murder that took place in the area.
A resident of the area who spoke to The Tribune on the condition of anonymity said the gun shots "sounded like firecrackers”.
"This was the first time I've seen or heard something like that (on the street)," she said. "I didn't know the victim. But that's someone's innocent child gunned down like a dog.”
