Get the right mix

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I read both Adrian Gibson’s and “A Concerned FNM” views on who should or should not be candidates for the FNM.

The idea that the FNM should run a full slate of new candidates is not in the best interest of the party nor the nation.

In my opinion Tommy Turnquest’s views, as were expressed in a recent interview with The Tribune, is the correct and politically wise approach to candidate selection.

He said: “I think the party must have a balanced mix of candidates with experience. Some new faces, some experienced, some young, some not so young, with various disciplines, whether banking, law, or accounting, or medicine – the general professions. You need to have a mix and it should be representative of our society.”

Mr Turnquest continued: “We have a lot of bright young people, they need exposure, they need mentorship, some degree of training and political seasoning. I think the FNM has done that in the past, I’ve been a beneficiary of that.”

Out with the old and in with the new will not work and it will spell disaster for our nation if the FNM wins the next election and the new prime minister has to select Cabinet Ministers from all inexperienced and untested Members of Parliament.

The country would be better served with seasoned and experienced politicians like Loretta Butler Turner, Neko Grant, Dion Foulkes, Carl Bethel, Desmond Bannister, Michael Pintard and Darron Cash along with the new fresh faces and talents of Theo Neilly, Dr. Duane Sands, Monique Gomez, Pakeisha Parker, Adrian Gibson, Shanondon Cartwright, Heather Hunt, Karen Butler, Ethan Adderley and John Bostwick.

A balanced slate will help to ensure an FNM victory and give comfort to the voters that if the FNM wins the election the public will have confidence in the FNM’s ability to effectively govern our beloved Bahamas.
