EDITOR, The Tribune.
Michael Pintard, chairman of the FNM, publicly stated that there will not be a convention this year. His statement is not in keeping with our party’s constitution which states: “A Party Convention shall be held at least once in every two years, at which time and place as the Central Council shall appoint.”
The FNM has had two one-day leadership conventions but not full conventions since the 2012 election. The party is due a full convention.
With all due respect to the chairman, it is not his call as to where and when a convention is to be held.
The FNM was conceived in a spirit of freedom, nurtured in struggle and born into a world founded on the rule of law. We must at all times stay true to our founding principles and the legacy of our founding fathers.
A large section of our party supports having a convention this November to confront the grave national crises facing our nation, to conduct the election of officers and to bring together and unify our FNM family.
The proposed November “Summit” by our leader and chairman belittles the depth of problems facing not only our country, but our beloved organisation as well, and will only unsettle the party and cause grave concern to the FNM’s many supporters throughout the country.
If we wish to be trusted with the governance of our democracy, we must act democratically within our party.
