Ruining our beaches with garbage

By DONITRA DAVIS

CONCERNS are being raised about rubbish left on Cabbage Beach, Paradise Island, by vendors who use the area by Riu Palace Hotel near the public access road to sell goods and rent umbrellas.

At the weekend, it appeared no one was cleaning up after a busy day. Piles of trash were left to wash out to sea at high tide.

A local businessman, who was spending the weekend at the Riu, went for a walk with his wife around 7pm on Sunday and was shocked to find the beach strewn with rubbish.

“I really do not know when this all started but it is really embarrassing for me to experience a quarter mile of rubbish with tourists,” he told The Tribune.

“I felt the need to to start picking up the trash but it was not a one-man job.”

Beaches are one of the Bahamas’ main attractions for locals and tourists and there are fears that the uncollected rubbish could cause pollution of the sand and the water.

They're ruining Junkanoo beach too. It looks like a junky mess now. How can so much unplanned development continue to happen?

thanks for the article - it touched a nerve in me. There is also so much rubbish left at private beaches along Eastern Rd. Bahamians pull up to these little hideaway, sleep, eat, fish, have sex and leave their trash and condoms - why? Wendy's, KFC, Bamboo Shack, Super Value provides bags why can’t these beach guest (trespassers) use their store bags to cart away their trash with them to the trash can. I am sure property owners don’t really mind you enjoying their beach but to leave trash says you don’t respect their property or our waters. I want us to respect our beaches and most importantly our marine life - one of the most precious resources we have in the Bahamas. Nothing hurts more than to see beer cans and Styrofoam cups in our coral reefs and waters. We need to start a public service program to prompt respect of our beaches. Let us be set apart from what is deem the greatest around the world: Fuji, Canary Is, Hawaii etc…
