RESIDENTS of Nassau Village reacted with shock and dismay after a man was shot dead in front of a barber shop following a chase in the community shortly after 11am yesterday.
The deceased, identified by relatives as 28-year-old Dantoine Burrows, tried to run into a barber shop on Taylor Street when he was shot. His murder is the 25th to occur this year.
The other shooting victim, a 27-year-old man, was transported to the hospital and was last night listed as being in critical condition.
Police Chief Superintendent Paul Rolle said: "Two men were seen running and being pursued by two men, one armed with what appeared to be an assault weapon and the other with a handgun. The shots were discharged from the direction of both of these males when one of them attempted to run into the barber shop and collapsed.
"EMS responded here and pronounced him lifeless. Shortly afterwards officers were directed to a residence on Price Street where a second male was found suffering from multiple gunshots to the back. The persons after the shooting left in a silver or grey, small vehicle.
Emotional residents gathered at Elizabeth Avenue in Nassau Village following the crime.
One relative of the murder victim called the incident a "tremendous shock," adding that Mr Burrows was anticipating the birth of his first child in the next two months.
Another resident, Sandra Goodman, the owner of the property where Mr Burrows was shot and killed, broke into tears as she explained how a bullet penetrated her house.
"The bullet gone straight through where I was and it's affecting me because that's where I does have my grandchildren," she said, adding that she has long urged her husband to have them all move from the area because of safety concerns.

What's your point News Editor....maybe to be the CNN fear monger of making your viewers too damn afraid leave their homes, of Bahamaland?
Comrades now you know for damn sure, why Tribune newspapers are not sold or allowed onto cruise ships or any of the major hotel gift shops properties - Baha Mar soon too.
Good Lord Almighty can you just visualize the Tribune's bold-faced headlines, if we start getting terrorists in Bahamaland?
i guess its less costly than digging around to expose the mess over at Carnival 2015. i guess not when it's your offical policy to endorse Carnival 2015.

A shooting is still news and the cruise ships don't need the Tribune to find this information out. The American Embassy keeps visitors well informed of how bad they believe the crime situation is. So much so they're afraid to step off the ship.
TalRussell 9 years, 9 months ago
Comrade for damn sure the stern actions taken by cruise ships and the major hotels, don't agree with you that a shooting is still a news reason for media sensationalism at every damn opportunity.

TalRussel u NORMALLY talk A LOT of smack MOST times but even a broken clock is right twice a day. I actually agree with you this time...but the problem is not with the Tribune, its all Bahamian media. They HIGHLIGHT the negative (murders, robberies, etc.). They make Bahamians afraid with these negative headlines. Maybe they should place positive stories on the front page and the negative in the back.
IslandTransPlant 9 years, 9 months ago
News is news if the positive out weigh the negative then so be all theta blame that you guys are placing at the media's feet the law abiding citizen working with the government needs to step up and reclaim the streets from these animals that can't even trad or write a bunch of dumb Fu%ks.
ThisIsOurs 9 years, 9 months ago
Hmmm...I'm of the opinion that as Bahamians we've excelled at painting facades to hide what we really are. And we fool nobody. We can put all the nice stories we want in the front page, people know we have a crime problem, people know our murder rate is high. We need to stop advocating facades, starting with our d-average government ministers in their expensive suits and cars who can't even read the speech someone else had to write for them.

You already have terrorist in Bahamland dude...wake up....

65 days into the year...we are doing well, a murder at least once in 3 days. We are on target for 140 murders in 2015 at this rate!!

With social media the way it is, the Tribune is probably providing the news later than Facebook or Twitter. The days of the media being guilty of being the bearers of bad news is long gone. The Tribune is just doing its job.
TalRussell, the Tribune and social media aren't hurting us, we are hurting ourselves with all this violence. The only way to stop the bad news is to stop the violence.
TalRussell 9 years, 9 months ago
Comrade Economist from The Tribune we expect journalistic standards, over a Facebook or Twitter..When you scare the people, the nation becomes a frightened tourism nation. Criminals thrive off of a nation living under fear. Criminals do not rush to surrender. And,neither should a nation's people ever surrender to thugs. Some of our judges, lawyers, officials, politicians and policeman's - along with media people done surrendered to the criminal thugs a long time ago. So, if not a fearless people, who in hell will defeat these bastards? Seems you have done joined the cowardly media types? But count me and thousands more out - cuz we do not like associating with running-scared kinds people. And, if the Tribune don't like it, they damn well know how to block my posts. But that will only prove how cowardly they really are acting. .
Amen!

You are correct, all news now...be it a 300 lb. fish caught off the Bahamas waters, or, a murder, it is all news and we get it instantly as it happens. I am in Virginia. US So hiding negative news on the bad page of the paper will do nothing. Everyone in the states is well aware of the high crime and the violent attacks. My two cents, hope it helps.

Anyone check Bahamas Press in the last little while? There is a picture of the dead guy right on the main page! At least the Tribune has the decency not to publish these gruesome pictures which are no doubt all over social media anyway the instant it happened.
TalRussell 9 years, 9 months ago
Comrades NO PLP, FNM or DNA politician would be willing to call for the PM to immediately fire 50% of policeman's across all ranks and pay scales. I might be a Costa Rican consultant but, sending home fifty percent of the rank and file of the no longer required, over the next 30 days will not have a negative effect on policing, as they are not presently performing any necessary policing duties They are useless in helping to curtail crime. Pay them a fair severance pay and send them packing home. let them decide how quick they want to go booking for jobs in the private sector. If they take another government job, which should not be made political easy, they cannot receive severance pay.

Oops typo error.. i am NOT a Costa Rican consultant .

The right honorable minister of tourism Mr. Obidiah Wilchcombe' say Bahamians are not angry enough about this type of crime to want to do something about it. Killers using assault weapons at 11:00 in the high of day and chase down two men and shoot them killing one while our leaders busy planning a flipping carnival. It is not the Tribunes headlines that are screaming, it is the blood shed that is flowing like a river on the streets and byways of Bahamaland.
ThisIsOurs 9 years, 9 months ago
Super value Winston robbed. Disabled boy accosted in home invasion. On the good news front Dr Johnson says he believes in Bahamians we don't need a headliner for carnival
John 9 years, 9 months ago
The fact is some 24 Bahamians have already lost their lives to murder this year. The reality is at least another 100 persons will be killed in the remaining 9 months of this year. Are you willing to put your name in a hat, Tal Russell and see who next? Then stop blaming the media for saying we living in a flipping wAr zOne
ThisIsOurs 9 years, 9 months ago
Crime is there and cannot be hidden and needs to be addressed. But It's not a war zone "yet". I think the majority of Bahamians and visitors walking out of their doors in the morning have the reasonable expectation that they will return back home incident free. We are still surprised/shocked when an incident is reported, if there's any good news it's that.
duppyVAT 9 years, 9 months ago
You are safe outside of Nassau and Freeport ............. and if you watch the news (on the other islands) you are afraid of what you see and hear
John 9 years, 9 months ago
I will disagree with you completely. While most visitors are more safe in the Bahamas than Bahamians, it is because they have received advisories alerting them about the crime situations in New Providence and Grand Bahama. Most follow the advice and do not leave the s designated "safe tourist zones" and so yes they are safe. On the other hand at least fifty percent of Bahamians have been affected by violent crime, including robbery, rape or murder over the past 10 years. Many have had to attend funerals of loved ones, or family gatherings for persons who have been robbed or raped or otherwise harmed by some crime. And yet there is the flip side. Drive pass the prison during visiting hours and see the hundreds gathered to visit family members gathered to visit family members and loved ones. Or go to the courts and see the numerous family members of murdered victims just hoping for justice so they can bring closure. Then there are family members, mothers especially, of accused persons who are not as concerned about weather the person is innocent or guilty but with just "hoping things work out for him and he be all right." And yet there are families of criminals and persons who who have committed crime who live in constant fear of retaliation. Retaliation that can cause them to be harmed or even cost them their lives. Many have had to move out of the homestead for their own safety, while others cannot go to certain places or go in certain areas. And the families of murdered victims whose killer has never been identified or they do not know the motive for the killing live with an even greater fear : the fear of the unknown. When assassins can trek through the streets under the blazing high noon sun with assault weapons and gun down victims, that is a war zone.
ThisIsOurs 9 years, 9 months ago
You trivialize what a real war zone looks like and feels like. From what I've seen on TV anyway... You would have Bahamians in droves carrying all the worldly possessions they could to get on the next airplane or boat anything to get away from the carnage. We're in a pretty bad state but we're not at "war zone" state, and hopefully we turn around before we get there.
John 9 years, 9 months ago
Is it true that there have been multiple shootings in Pinewood just a short while ago?
John 9 years, 9 months ago
Okay we are not in a war zone. We just live in a place where at least 100 persons are being gunned down every year. The killings are no longer done under the darkness of night but in the brightest of the daylight sun. Some families have had as many of 4 members killed, asissination style, in as many years and up to 10 members if you include extended society. This is not a war zone, just a bloody place to live.
ThisIsOurs 9 years, 9 months ago
Yeah crime bad
B_I_D___ 9 years, 9 months ago
We are on target for 140 this year...maybe more depending on the pinewood outcome...

PLP & FNM are so damn stupid they can't even "copy" U.S. and other first world countries with legalization of marijuana which would allow them to release 100's of people incarcerated for personal use possession and make room at Fox Hill for hard core criminal animals out on bail terrorizing the country.
duppyVAT 9 years, 9 months ago
Yep ............ too many persons are in HMP for non violent crimes. HMP should be reserved for hardcore criminals and all the others should be fined or given community service with Public Works, churches, schools, non-profits etc. But we have 400 killers on the streets and fellas caught with a pound of weed in HMP .................. this gatta stop!!!!!!!!
