TWO TEENAGE boys are in serious condition in hospital after they were involved in a five-car collision on Yamacraw Hill Road late Saturday night.
Superintendent Craig Stubbs, officer in charge of the Traffic Division, said fire fighters were forced to use the “Jaws of Life” to extract the teens who were pinned inside the mangled vehicle.
Supt Stubbs said speed “definitely played a factor” in the accident, but it is too early to determine if anyone will be charged.
“The accident happened shortly after 10pm. Five cars were involved and six persons were injured, two of them very seriously. From our information, one car was travelling at a high rate of speed on Yamacraw Hill road, when they slammed into a car that was coming out of a side corner. We also have information that the driver of the first vehicle may have also been eating and not paying attention to the road,” he said.
“The collision caused a chain reaction with three other vehicles that were also travelling on that road. As a result two persons were very seriously injured and the Jaws of Life had to be used to get them out of their vehicle. In addition to speed, these were young inexperienced drivers and that played a role in this accident as well. So we are looking to see if someone will be charged with driving without due care and caution.”
The Tribune understands the teens involved in the accident had just left the National High School Track and Field Championships at the Thomas A Robinson Sports Centre.
Four teens hurt in the crash have been released from hospital, however, two are still listed in serious condition and their injuries are said to be non life threatening.
Investigations continue.

This accident occurred sometime after 8pm on Saturday night, not 10pm. I was taking my daughter and her classmate to a high school pay-party not far from Treasure Cove and we came face to face with a very smashed up white car. At least 2 people lying on the grass, a scooter and I heard another car was across the street almost up a tree. Lots of people everywhere. Didn't see any police or ambulance when we were driving by; maybe the accident has JUST happened. More likely around 8:15-8:30, but definitely not 10pm.

Agreed...Yamacraw East of Treasure Cove was virtually impassable at around 9:00, so happened WELL before 10...maybe 10 was when EMS and police finally turned up!!

That's what I thought later too; maybe that's when EMS and the police arrived.

Either that or the police officer writing the report had advanced his watch already in anticipation of the time change early Sunday morning.

Nah...if they were smoking weed they would not have been speeding!......trust me! More like alcohol and texting.
